Krugerrand

The gold Krugerrand is a South African coin which was introduced in 1967 as a vehicle for private ownership of gold. It was the first one ounce gold bullion coin ever made. Since then the gold Krugerrand, which is produced by the South African Mint has proved popular and by the 1980’s accounted for 90% of the gold coin market. During the 1970’s and 80’s some countries forbade import of gold Krugerrands because of the association with the apartheid government, which has since been abolished.

The 1oz Krugerrand coin is today one of the most popular and cost effective ways of investing in gold bullion coins among UK investors. Their fame and popularity makes them an especially good investment as there will almost always be a market for the coin when the time comes to cash in on your investment. In 1980 the South African Mint also introduced three smaller coins with a half ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce of gold. It was in fact the success of the gold Krugerrand which later influenced other gold producing nations to mint their own bullion coins such as the US Eagle.
